How technological changes can result in Big Savings for Mid-Sized Hospitals

Mapgistics' CEO, Kurt Gunther, first met with Downey Regional Medical Center in 2001. "After just a brief interview with Downey Regional Medical Center and surveying their operational system, it was determined that we could save them a substantial amount of time and money by creating a web-based bed management information system", says Gunther. "We knew from our research that patient discharge delays often resulted in operational expenses in excess of $3,500 per day", adds Gunther, "that's a tremendous waste of valuable hospital resources."
Nine months after their initial meeting, Mapgistics working closely with Downey Regional Medical Center's George Murillo, had installed a completely web-based and easy-to-use Bed Management Information SystemŽ which allowed hospital staff to accurately and instantaneously track vital information on patient admission and discharge procedures.
The results were well documented by Downey Regional Medical Center.
A Patient Intake Assessment Study indicated our institution would realize significant operational and financial benefit by applying new technology to our patient discharge workflow process. We wanted a solution that was web-based, easy-to-install, easy-to-use, easy-to-manage and provide reports that would allow us improve the management of the process. The Bed Management System has exceeded these goals. Implementation of the system has resulted in a reduction of the time it takes to discharge a patient an average 25% to 45% across all benchmarked nursing units.
